Copied from a pewter original, currently in York museum; the acorn knop ( top decorative piece of the spoon handle), is one of the most common decorative motifs found on spoons in England. It is a traditional symbol of immortality and was also regarded as a talisman and remedy against cholera and fluxes. This widespread style begins about 1400 and continues to be popular into the mid-seventeenth century.
