The famous badge of the ragged staff, upon which, in relief, is a cross and the inscription ‘Maria Ora’, (Mary pray for me). The Earls of Warwick were certainly among the most powerful of late medieval houses. The ragged staff was used as a badge by the Beauchamps and by their successors to the Earldom of Warwick, the Nevilles.
