Description

Time period: 16th Century
Origin: English
Materials: Pewter, Gold plate (24ct)
Product Dimensions: 30mm diameter.

This gold plated pewter coin bears the figure of Saint Michael casting out the demon on one side, and coat of arms of Elizabeth the 1st on the reverse. Disease and illness were associated with the casting out of devils and demons, so when the monarch performed the ceremony of “the laying on of hands”, an Angel coin was given to those that were touched. These coins were often pierced and worn as ‘touch-pieces’ bound around the injury or area inflicted.

This piece has been pierced and prepared so that it can be worn as a decorative piece on a chain or fine ribbon.
