Summary:
The term ‘artillery’ was historically applied to all forms of projectile weapon not solely to those that used gunpowder. Until the early sixteenth century little distinction was made between handguns, field guns and siege artillery when categorising firearms, grouping them all as gunpowder weapons. Thus I am using the term artillery in its modern sense to describe heavy, crew-served weapons which were not integrated into infantry formations.
