Saint George, mounted in full armour slays the dragon. The cult of Saint George achieved widespread popularity in the late middle ages and by the 15th century he had replaced St Edmund and Edward the Confessor as patron saint of England. Relics of St. George, including his heart, were kept at Windsor.
Historically, Saint George is thought to have been a soldier in the Roman army, where his Christian faith led to his death under the Emperor Diocletian. The popular legend in which Saint George slays the dragon and saves the Princess dates from around the 12th century and is symbolic of the victory of good over evil.
