Further details:
Although not immediately obvious, this badge combines two symbols used in connection to devotion of the Virgin Mary – the shield as a symbol of protection and the Herb Paris or Truelove flower. While the truelove was a popular lover’s flower it was also used frequently in Marian symbolism, perhaps alluding to the Holy Trinity plus one through its four petals, while also sometimes fusing the symbols of earthly love with religious devotion.
Copied form an example in the British Musuem. 14th or 15th century
