Summary:
In the Middle Ages as in any age, a complex construction was only as good as what held it together. Furniture was assembled using pegs, nail or complex joinery such dovetailing or splining to hold their parts in place. Leather was tacked over boxes and bookbinding. Parchment and later, paper could be stitched in place. However, such mechanical methods were not always practical or stitched in place. In these cases, there was a range of adhesives to choose from depending on the strength needed and the nature of the material that needed to be attached.
