This appendix sets the reasons why these illustrations are valid representation of common English people between 1558 and 1660. It also covers any linked mention of costume in the accompanying texts. The images themselves are given more prominence in Appendix 2 “The Corpus”, in this appendix they are only in thumbnail form for reference unless important to a point being illustrated. The images are arranged in this appendix in date order.

 

The Corpus Justified comes in two parts: Part 1: The Corpus Justified. 1558–1622 (Volume 27) Part 2: The Corpus Justified. 1623–1660 (Volume 28)

 

examination in the ‘Clothes of the Common People in Elizabethan and Early Stuart England’. In this series of books reconstructions are made for a range of styles of each garment. The fabrics and materials closest to the originals still available have been used and all dyeing is with period dyestuffs using period methods, mostly at the reconstructed period dyehouse in the Green Valley.

 

For each reconstruction patterns are provided. A description of the fabrics used and photographs of the completed reconstructions are also included.
