People have fished throughout history, whether in catching them by hand, spear, net, traps or hook and line. As people settled into community life, and as occupational classes developed between servants and gentry, spare time became available to many. As the hunt for meat animals became a recreational activity to those with spare time and money, so too did the pursuit of fish become a recreational activity.
