Pilgrim badge: Pelican in her Piety
Time period: Late 14th to 15th Century
Product Dimensions: 3.8cm diameter
The badge depicts a pelican feeding her young. The Pelican was looked upon as a symbol of mans redemption as it was thought that pelicans could feed their young by plucking flesh from their own breast.
Badge making did not only serve a religious market. It occupied a position in all aspects of life as for example, political and military to show allegiance, celebrate amorous intent, and indicate sporting interests, often with a satirical flavour.
