Further details:
This mirror is similar to the cosmetic mirrors carried by both men and women of rank on their persons – usually in the pouch. It was not strictly a cosmetic tool however, being sold and?used?by pilgrims as a type of ‘touch reliquary’. By?capturing?the reflection of a shrine within the mirror case, it was believed that some of the?power of the shrine would return?with them.
The crucifixion scene shows Saint John to the left, with a bible, and Mary to the right carrying a purse. Above the figure of Christ is a sun and moon.
