Description

Author:

Peachey, Stuart

Summary:

Husbandman was the description given to smaller farmers although the term is loosely applied to anyone who engages in husbandry. This work will look at the husbandman primarily through probate inventories. These were lists of his possessions except freeholds at his death with rough valuations. Often they area systematic working through his house room by room and an analysis of the data can build up a picture of what farming and domestic activities he was engaged in, what each room of house house was used for and even other factors such as literacy from the ownership of books.
