This book is the 2nd of two volumes in a preliminary analysis of arable farming at the period based primarily on the major works on the subject by period authors: the works of Thomas Tusser, Henry Best and Gravase Markham. Tusser was based in Eat Anglia, Best of the edge f the Yorkshire wolds, and Markham who was the only one who was not primarily a farmer, draws on the examples from the Home counties: Herts, Essex, Middx, Surrey, Kent (especially on the Weald, Lincolnshire, Cheshire, Lancashire – probably only the south-, Norfolk, Suffolk, Cambridgeshire, Huntingdonshire, Nottingham shire (most of the middle shires of England) and southern Wiltshire around Salisbury for the English Husbandman. …. This work deals with arable field crops of the period and their cultivation. This includes the plants themselves, preparation of the fields, sowing, weeding, harvesting, storage and on farm processing, it does not cover the tools and wagons which are covered in other volumes of this series: Agricultural Hand Tools and Wagons, Carts & Pack Animals.
